MIT’s Persona’s 25.08.09

The clever folk over at MIT have created this cool little app that “shows you how the internet see’s you”. Clearly I’m doing something right with this interweb thing.

PDA Blogs 25.08.09

Making iPhone/PDA specific sites for your personal site really isn’t that fun, I’ve done it before – and it’s time consuming and tedious (although there’s something to be said for developing for just one browser). Anyways, I was pretty impressed with this WordPress PDA plugin – which will convert your blog into a PDA ready site (see above). Check it out. -
Beginning CSS Web Development 25.08.09
Recently, a few friends of mine who work in the fashion, packaging and print design sectors have started turning their attention to web. More than anything, it’s become apparent that a knowledge of web design is an extremely useful commodity for any designer wanting to make themselves truly indispensable. My advice to these friends has been to try and get a basic handling on how a website is built, and how it works – which will, of course, give you the ammo to create kick-ass sites (seeing as they’re already Photoshop ninjas).I’ve found myself shouting a lot about this book – Beginning CSS Web Development by Simon Collison. It’s what I used to get a grasp on CSS a few years back, and although I’ve read a whole stack of books on the same topic since, this is still the best by far. So if you’re keen on broadening your repotouire, or fancy brushing up on your CSS skills – I reckon this is a pretty good use for 1,924 (Amazon) of your hard earned English pennies.

Objectified 24.08.09

I was lucky enough to see a screening of Objetified a while back, and I’ve got to admit that I was extremely impressed. I’m usually quite wary of “design is the most important thing ever” books/films/people – but this was refreshingly different (it is Gary Hustwit, afterall). And although you won’t see it at the cinema anymore, you can pre-order the DVD, which I’d encourage you to do. Objectified is yet another one of these things, like John Maeda’s book (left) that doesn’t specifically talk about web design – but affects it in every single way. -

Dead lie… 21.08.09
We’ve lost countless jobs because we wouldn’t commit to these sorts of deadlines (“We need it no later than a week… two weeks, max”). And almost every single one misses its target when the prospective client goes elsewhere, with a consultancy happy to lie about timelines. But this post is no rant against those con-men consultants; such behavior is rife in new markets and we professionals must take the rough with the smooth
Couldn’t have said it better myself. Not only does this kind of practice upset your client, it upsets the people involved (designers, developers, strategists etc) who pride themselves on quality output, and not company profit. Via Contrast Blog

Search 2.0 10.08.09

I guess you’ve seen the new Twitter homepage? Apart from the fact that it’s been redesigned, what’s the first thing you notice about it?The main feature on the site is a (giant) search bar.
The point of this observation, and this post isn’t to marvel at the new homepage (I’m not all that impressed) – it’s in response to the term “two point oh” (2.0) which people are chucking around far too freely recently. 2.0 represents where we are now, so I thought I’d speculate a little on the future…

Oh, hello 02.08.09
Wow, it’s been a while since I last posted something decent – sorry about that! I’m going to try and be better over the next week or so.
It’s been a bit of a mad time since I became a full-time freelancer in June. I’ve been working on a number of small personal projects (including the previews app,
which I’m still tweaking), some freelance projects (including the exciting branding/website for a design agency, an e-commerce site design and build and a travel webapp)…. and I’ve also been working in-house for a small start-up called Skype. On top of all that, I’ve just arrived back from the beautiful Estonia – which was pretty far removed from what I expected eastern-Europe to be like – beautiful place! So pretty busy in all!
