Building Blocks 18.11.09
The design of good houses requires an understanding of both the construction materials and the behavior of real humans. – Peter Morville

Search 2.0 10.08.09

I guess you’ve seen the new Twitter homepage? Apart from the fact that it’s been redesigned, what’s the first thing you notice about it?The main feature on the site is a (giant) search bar.
The point of this observation, and this post isn’t to marvel at the new homepage (I’m not all that impressed) – it’s in response to the term “two point oh” (2.0) which people are chucking around far too freely recently. 2.0 represents where we are now, so I thought I’d speculate a little on the future…

CSS Viewer 23.06.09

I’ve just been shown CSS Viewer (for Firefox) – and it’s blown FireBug clean out of the water! Shows a concise breakdown of any element that you hover in an attractive window - it even converts those pesky em’s! Download it here -
Check ‘em! 19.06.09

If, like me, you’re constantly plagued by contrast issues (I mean c’mon… even w3.org doesn’t pass!) – then this site may be of use. It’s the best of it’s kind (that I’ve seen) and will check your webpage for any issues. Granted, the page you’re testing actually has to be fully developed – so this may all just be too little, too late… -
Pete is… 13.06.09
Writing an article about status messages – and how they relate to the future evolution of the web. And I know status messages are an obscure place to start, but just humor me for now, this is going somewhere!

Dear American Airlines 02.06.09

I just came across the site of UX Designer, Dustin Curtis – who recently wrote to American Airlines with the following:I redesigned your website’s front page, and I’d like to get your opinion. I’m a user interface designer. I travel sometimes. Recently, I had the horrific displeasure of booking a flight on your website, aa.com.

Design Exploration 21.05.09
Following my post last week about the evolution of a website, I’ve become quite obsessed with this aspect of web design. Today I came across the evolution of a tag-based navigation, designed by Jason Zimdars (of 37Signals). Proves a very interesting read! It’s good to see designers devoting a considerable amount of time and energy into making something so “simple”. Kudos!

The Evolution of a Website 13.05.09

If you haven’t already, check out StackOverflow Dev Days (above, via @daniel_howells) – namely the insane background effect that happens when you resize your browser window!! Interestingly, I just stumbled accross the evolution of that site, as blogged by its designer, Mike Kus… It’s nice to know you’re not alone, when even Carsonified designers take 13 rounds to make a decent looking site! -
Vimeo Redesign 25.04.09

Last week Vimeo changed their homepage (I only just noticed, getting slack!) – and I gotta say that it’s beautiful! I especially like the subtle background animation, which reminds me a little of Volll. The site is a little more serious – but still has the personality that I love about Vimeo. Click the image to see the old homepage vs. the new one (I very randomly had the old homepage saved locally). -
Nikola Mircic 24.04.09

Check out the portfolio of interface designer Nikola Mircic (www.nikolamircic.com). I’m seeing more and more sites with this type of layout, but Nikola has got it spot on! Some great work here too! -
Little Snapper 24.04.09

Not only do I love the look of this iPhone app (beautiful design) – but I’m blown away by the way they’ve designed the simple and elegant site, and actually used the iPhone to show a demo. This is how iPhone app sites should look! -
Links like Links 24.04.09
I was reading this post by Roger Johansson (456 Berea Street) about how you should make your links look like links – and he’s got a point. I try and fight it, but in the end the web has to be functional. I do, however, prefer a dotted underline for my link styles. Far more classy!
