Facebook are soon to launch their new-look site, including changes to pretty much all pages. I’m sceptical of re-designing something of such social ‘importance’ - is it such a good idea changing a site that was already good?
A good example of this kind of thing is the new design of Last.fm. Although only launched at the end of last week - Last.fm’s forums have already seen tens of thousands of negative comments.
So what do you think of the new Facebook?
I found this site when I was designing the Google map part of YO! Sushi a while back - but then lost it. It’s a site that will generate a Google Map pin shadow - and even give you the API code to impliment it!
It’s quick, free and easy - and faster than trying to comp together your own PSD version of Google Maps! Try it out here.
Recently, since using 1Mb of JavaScript on every website has become acceptable practice, I’ve noticed an increase in the use of light/thickbox. I don’t this is neccessarily a bad thing - it does, however, become a problem when you start introducing functionlity within those windows (baskets, forms etc). (more…)

Is a new MySpace design on the horizon? Who knows? Who even cares?
There’s speculation of a re-design of MySpace (gasp!). The designs seem to have very distinct FaceBook-esque features (tabs, grads and AJAX bits) - but on the whole it’s much better than their existing site. I have no idea who’s responsible, or if there is even truth in the matter - but see for yourself.![]()

But then, what does a re-design matter when users have the tools in which to destroy their own profiles with flashing backgrounds and music? I think MySpace lost their way a while back anyway (although admittedly they’re a great place for musicians like Russ). What do you reckon?

Well, as a project manager once asked me; “What’s a favicon?”. It’s one of those tiny little 16×16px pictures that sit up in your address bar. It has no functionality, and does nothing more than simply look pretty. Or is there more? Take this for example,
Last week, for no apparent reason whatsoever, Google changed its favicon from the uppercase “G” of its logo to its lowercase “g”. And the blogs have gone crazy. They didn’t change the logo, they didn’t change the home page, they didn’t change the results page… they just changed a sixteen-pixel square and created a stir. Now that’s branding.
Not only that, but the favicon plays an important part within the browser. See the right image for an example, where no Favicon is available, the browser default kicks in – which in this example makes my bookmark look out-of-place.
