Hey! I'm Pete, and I'm a designer... and this is my blog - about web design, for web designers. Here you'll find all kinds of tips, tricks, information and inspiration linking, in some way, to web design.

    PlainView
A couple of people have been blogging about this recently - probably because it’s amazing! PlainView is an application for OS X, which is basically a full-screen browser (i.e. no toolbar etc).

It’s an absolutly invaluable tool if you’re in a job where you have to present websites often. It even has a presentation setting (where you can line up websites of your choosing). Very cool.

    Download it!

OS X ‘Grab’ + MSN File transfer = annoyingly slow and blurry imges. In comes ‘Skitch’. It’s a new program for OS X that replaces ‘Grab’ and lets you upload, and comment images instantly to the Skitch server.

I’m finding it great for sharing, and it’s also good for critiquing your websites (internally, of course). You can also customize the program to upload to your own server - which is what I’ve done. It takes a while to get past the millions of features, but worth the wait!

I wanted to quickly share Paparazzi with you. It’s a tiny bit of software I use about 10 times a day. It takes full-screen grabs of websites (so you don’t have to take multiples, then ’stitch’ them together in PhotoShop). It’s crystal clear, and is great for research and whatnot.

  • jQuery - One step closer to becoming Apple

There are loads of JavaScript libraries out there; moo:fx, prototype, that scriptalicious business – and Spry (or whatever the hell Dreamweaver tried to offload on us in v.8). But none seem to come close in ease, simplicity and functionality as jQuery. I’m clearly obsessed. I think it stems from an underlying hatred of Flash… and jQuery is one step closer to getting rid of useless Flash pockets all together!

As I’m a designer first, and a developer second – I’m far more interested in how stuff looks and functions… rather than whether the 14 people who still use IE 5.5 can use it. I just don’t care much about that. So this gallery is great for me to see what goodies I’m going to be using on my next project. It’s 37 exmples of jQuery plugins. And as for cross-browser, usa’ and accessibility issues, I’m reliably informed by Tom that the whole jQuery community is fully committed to standards et al…. it also works on my iPhone (give or take a few prods from my monkey fingers)!

As always, be aware of what your site looks like with JavaScript disabled and CSS off. So make sure there are no navigational issues when this is the case.

  • Curb your Facebook addiction!

Facebook is addictive, no doubt. Before long you’ll find yourself logging in 10 times a day just to see if you’ve been Poked. Now you don’t have to suffer the disappointment of not having any activity with this handy little tool.

FMenu sits quietly in your toolbar and simply notifies you whenever something happens - meaning you only visit FaceBook only when you ‘need’ to. It doesn’t make it any less addictive, it’ll just make your day slightly less counter-productive!
