Dead lie… 21.08.09
We’ve lost countless jobs because we wouldn’t commit to these sorts of deadlines (“We need it no later than a week… two weeks, max”). And almost every single one misses its target when the prospective client goes elsewhere, with a consultancy happy to lie about timelines. But this post is no rant against those con-men consultants; such behavior is rife in new markets and we professionals must take the rough with the smooth
Couldn’t have said it better myself. Not only does this kind of practice upset your client, it upsets the people involved (designers, developers, strategists etc) who pride themselves on quality output, and not company profit. Via Contrast Blog

Be nice 16.06.09
I don’t care how good you are at programming, finding bugs, whatever. If you’re rude, or if you speak poorly to people who don’t understand your… quirks…. you will wind up being shunted to the side. No one wants to work with someone who makes them feel beat down all the time, or someone who they simply can’t understand, or someone whose reaction to every issue is to start wailing about the end of the world — Catherine Powell
Wise words, via 37Signals
Also applies to those who seem to think that they’re amazing at everything. If you lord around thinking you’re the best, you’re just going to annoy everyone – me especially due to this Volvic challenge thing! -
Always Online 09.06.09
I was musing today (yeh, I told you I’d do that – see right) about how ‘connected’ I’ve become… mainly due to the fact that I use an iPhone, and I’m currently working at Skype. In a completely ironic twist, nowadays I’m more than likely to miss a phone call, as opposed to being instantly available on Skype, MSN, Google Talk, Yahoo Chat, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Email, comments on this blog and good old fashion text message!

What the Bing? 09.06.09

So I’m sure you’re aware of Bing, by now. It’s Microsoft’s search engine rival to Google. Now I’m not going to rant too much about this, as I’m sure you can make your own mind up – but on using it today (after reading this post about the ‘brand’), I found that not only does it do the exact same thing as Google, in the exact same way… it looks the same too!! Surprising for a site that claims…So we had an idea. Start over. And we did.

Konami Code 15.05.09

The Konami Code is a Japanese gaming cheat that consists of you pressing, in sequence up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a on your keypad. Now log into FaceBook, do the code, press enter, then see what happens when you click on something (like text, or the white background). I love hidden stuff like this! Check out this site, which lists all the other sites that have this ‘cheat’ (like Google, FaceBook etc) -
Paper Can’t Beat Rock! 14.05.09
I understand how scissors can beat paper, and I get how a rock can beat scissors, but there’s no fucking way paper can beat rock. Is paper supposed to magically wrap around rock and leave it immobile?…

…Like Your Mum 12.05.09

I saw this shameful attempt at an advert on Twitterific the other day. Does this really speak to people who are likely to use content management? -
Ugh, Lists! 07.05.09

At some point you’re going to have to design a page for A-Z listed items – and it’s the worst job in the world! So you might as well check out this resource, which has some pretty nice examples of existing ‘designs’.Update: I’ve got a few more to add to the list, www.ge.com/worldwide and www.catalogtree.net

I don’t do this, because it annoy me! Shameless. -

We Feel Fine 29.01.09
Client – “Hey, Buzz… what’s a good example of a nice webapp?”
Me – “Oh… er, there’s this one called… er… I CAN’T REMEMBER!”Jesus, the amount of times this has slipped my mind is untrue. So here it is, on my blog to be referenced forevermore.
We Feel Fine – “An exploration of human emotion, in six movements”, and the best Java (… not JavaScript, thanks Sara!) webapp I can think of!

Adobe Gripes 29.01.09
Illustrator CS4: Whoever made this couldn’t even manage to get 3 lines to intersect right… in a program designed for professional vector work for fuck sake.
Designers at their wit’s end from around the globe have contributed to this amazing blog, Adobe UI Gripes.
