960 Grid System By Buzz

I’ve never really used any pre-existing structures before (or blueprints, CSS or otherwise for that matter) until recently, when I worked with Johan on a quickfire project. The project required such a fast turnaround that development had to start pretty much the same time as design - so we chose to experiment with the 960 grid system.

It’s a pre-build structure that supports either a 12 or a 16 column grid in a variety of graphical formats. The templates show you guides for margins, padding and structure - and you fill in the blanks!

It’s actually surprisingly easy to use, and you can achieve great results from it without having to spend the time trialling new structures, when time doesn’t permit. Below is a grab of the blog I designed using the 12 column grid…

I was surprised how everything fell into place so neatly. It was also quick and easy to code, as the 960 website gives the markup and CSS all pre-built! Here’s the grid I used in the above design…

All in all, the 960 structure enabled me to design a blog, in its entirety, in just a day! I’ll be using the structure again soon, seeing as it comes in PNG format - which will be good for me when I learn Fireworks (soon!).
