SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is it worth paying attention to, or should it be condemned to be yet another acronym conveniently forgotten about by web designers? I mean, is it even the designers problem?
Well, yeh - it kinda is. And whilst we’re at it, so also is functionality, accessibility, cross-browser compatibility and javascript capabilities. That doesn’t mean that you should be an all-knowing oracle of information on all of the above (you can always ask a developer!), they just need some care and consideration.1
We already pay an unnecessary amount of attention to the ’safe area’, but I’d argue that optimization is even more important. After all, SEO makes the difference between your beautiful site being found by Google (and subsequently, by your users) and just being another dusty, forgotten project.
So the next time you’re walking your developers through your designs, have a little think about whether it’s a good idea to have all your headings in Univers… or having the homepage as one massive image. Just a thought
1. That is, unless, you design in Flash. In which case, my friend… go nuts! Speaking of which, check out MultiAdaptor.com, which is probably the best use of Flash I’ve seen!
