I Need Your Help! 31.08.08
I’ve been working on re-designing my portfolio, as the work on my current one (visit) is a bit out of date. These days I mainly focus on digital projects – so the ‘new’ site needs to reflect that both in content and in style.
For whatever reason, I decided to go for a re-design of my portfolio. But as the time to re-launch draws nearer, I’m finding it harder and harder to let go of the existing site. So I need your help! I’ve lined up both designs below (click the images for larger versions) for comparison.
Which design do you prefer?

Weekly Review 2 31.08.08
25th – 31st August, 2008
Doesn’t seem like a week ago that I wrote my first weekly review – time sure does fly when you’re busy as hell! Anyway, I’ve not accomplished as much as last week, but here’s what’s been going down… Read more

Facebook vs. China 29.08.08

Not really, but Zuckerberg announced yesterday that Facebook has just passed the 100 million active users mark. That’s the equivalent of every single active internet user in China (source). Quite an achievement! -
Useful Applications 29.08.08

There are two web applications that I’ve been using a lot recently which I want to tell you about. The first is something called Coded Preview. It’s a very simple (and free) application which enables you to upload a flat website concept, and display it centered, tiled, with a background or whatever – all on a private address. Read more -
Learn. Fail. Succeed 26.08.08
On the new POP website, filed under the Senior Designer “What you’ll do” heading
Learn. Fail. Learn. Succeed. Repeat.
Yep, that sounds about right. Although I feel that ‘Make Tea’ would be a suitable addition. It is, after all… the solution!

Important Change 25.08.08

There are two things you should never do if you’re interested in promoting a blog. Rule number one is that you should never use the RSS-man-on-a-bench image… but seeing as I’ve just done that, I’m going to do break the other rule – I’m changing the address of this blog.As of tomorrow, you’ll be able to see this blog at www.heybuzz.co.uk, so please update your RSS Subscription. Sorry about that!!

Vitra.com 20.08.08
I don’t usually showcase sites, but I felt this was worth making an exception for – the new Vitra site.

Future of Advertising 18.08.08
I flashed up my computer at home to do a little bit of advertising work, promoting a new online service. Whilst my applications were loading up I logged into Facebook for my quick fix and saw this…
Cheeky! They’ve taken the Facebook button style, colours and font treatment to create something that actually looks like it’s part of the Facebook application!
Has web advertising really come to this? Do we really have to design banners in such a way as to trick users into clicking them? Surely you can’t just con visitors into a sale or conversion?!

I don’t like Popcorn! 12.08.08
Seth Godin writes…
I don’t like popcorn.
Very few people make a lot of money from popcorn… it’s surprisingly unsuccessful -
Inspiration 11.08.08
I arrived back yesterday from being away for just a few days to about 600 new feeds from my various blogs. That’s awesome! I subscribe to a LOT of blogs, and all kinds of stuff too – from the blog of Boris Johnson, to american illustrators and of course, ffffound. All of the blogs I subscribe to inspire me in some way or another. So why, as a web designer, do I subscribe to only 4 web design blogs?
Well, because stuff like this inspires me:

…and not “50 Greatest Photoshop Tutorials” or ‘100 Websites that use so much JavaScript, it’ll make you cry”. So I’m led to wonder, and rant a little about why web design blogs have begun preaching to us about how they’re the difinitive resource for design inspiration?!
You won’t be inspired to create the latest amazing website, and finally break free of the web2.0 thing if you constantly trawl through Smashing, Web Designer Wall and WebCreme. As much as I love those sites (and I do), why not try looking at some of these instead?
Monster Munch, Neatorama, WhatNow?, Evasee, Swissmiss, ISO50 and Seth’s Blog (to name but a few)! Save some images, make a scrap book, try your hand at photography or typography, but for god’s sake don’t waste your time trying to find a use for the little RSS man sitting on the bog…
OK, rant over (sorry!).
