FaceBox 03.07.08
Recently, since using 1Mb of JavaScript on every website has become acceptable practice, I’ve noticed an increase in the use of light/thickbox. I don’t this is neccessarily a bad thing – it does, however, become a problem when you start introducing functionlity within those windows (baskets, forms etc).
This is only a problem because, with JavaScript disabled (still, a lot of people have that), the functionlity won’t show – losing you a sale, or a customer. But there’s a solution I’ve been playing with!
Facebox is a blatant (but brilliant) ripoff of the technique employed by Facebook, but based on jQuery. It simply calls upon, then animates a DIV of your choice. This means that, amongst other benefits, there is a possibility to make this work with JavaScript disabled. In my example, I’ve simply shown the DIV within a <noscript> tag, and placed it at the bottom of the site. This will mean that people with JS can happily view the notice in all its glory – whilst those with JS disabled will still be able to see the intended message. I’ll be using this on my next project, so I’ll let you know when that’s launched!
